We picked up fast food before heading back to Mount Edge. After seeing Lyssie with Jace I was no longer worried that he was a threat, but I was frustrated. She clearly told him everything but refused to tell me what my own mother had done to make her so upset that she’d gotten insanely drunk in the middle of the day.

The dinner date and romantic drive I’d planned were off the table, which was also a bit frustrating. I’d planned them because she seemed to care a lot about romance, but it looked like I was wrong about that.

“You’ll want to stop at my place so I can put on a little makeup and wash off the smell of puke before Reese sees me.” Lyssie’s voice was soft.

That was a good call; Reese would have a lot of questions if we showed up with Lyssie looking and smelling like she did.

She directed me to her house, which wasn’t far from her mom’s at all. I pulled up in front of a big, rundown house with four cars and a motorcycle in front of it.

“How many roommates do you have?” I frowned.

“I live with seven men. Jace is one of them.” She slipped out of the car, and I followed her up to the door. “Before you ask, there has never been anything romantic between me and any of them. We’re all shifters.”

She opened the door, and we walked inside. The place smelled like cookies, and there was a tall guy who looked like Jace holding a spatula and sitting on the counter. From the kitchen you could see into the living room, where there were four guys with the same color hair sitting on the couch.

They all turned when we entered.

“Guys, this is Mason. Mason, these are my roommates. I’ll shower fast.” Lyssie said, heading up the stairs without another word.

“Hey, bro.” The blonde guy with the spatula waved, flashing a bright red cotie on his wrist that marked him as a chimp shifter. “I’m Layton. If you’ve been hanging with Lyssie, you’ve probably met my brother, Jace.”

That explained the resemblance.

The guys on the couch introduced themselves as the Roran brothers; Stetson, Rhett, Beck, and Calvin. They were otter shifters.

They went back to watching their football game, and I sat down at the kitchen table. Jace tossed me a few cookies while he told me about their family photography business and the one roommate I hadn’t met yet—a grizzly shifter named Zane who had left to find his soulmate the same day I’d met Lyssie.

We got to chatting about my job, and I was explaining to him the science behind knowing if someone was a human soulmate before they met their shifter when Lyssie came down the stairs. With makeup and another short, flowery dress on, I never would’ve guessed that she was hungover had I not seen her puking her guts out a few hours earlier.

“Ready?” She checked.

“Yep.” I stood, crossing the room.

“Come help with boxes, people.” Lyssie called out.
